A Generational Legacy in Horticulture

The foundation of Anderson’s Seed Co. is built upon the passion and dedication of Horace and Mary Anderson, the company’s founders and respected figures in the world of horticulture. In the early years, Horace and Mary established La Costa Flower Shop & Nursery, Inc., a beloved nursery that became a hub for local plant lovers. Their legacy lives on through their grandson, Eric Anderson, who continues to uphold the family tradition of excellence in both plant cultivation and seed distribution.

Horace and Mary’s keen eye for quality plants and their understanding of the horticulture industry paved the way for many of Anderson’s Seed Co’s notable introductions. Among their most famous contributions was the promotion of the Schefflera arboricola, which became one of the most successful indoor plants in the market. Horace and Mary obtained the original cuttings for this plant from the prestigious Huntington Botanical Gardens, recognizing its potential as a perfect interior plant. Today, Schefflera arboricola remains a widely-loved plant for its lush, glossy leaves and adaptability to indoor environments.

Other significant introductions by Horace and Mary include:

  • Asparagus meyerii: A unique ornamental plant known for its feathery foliage and versatility in landscapes.

  • Chamaedorea metallica: A striking palm species renowned for its metallic sheen and popularity as an ornamental houseplant.

  • Pisonia variegata: A distinctive plant with beautifully variegated foliage, adding a tropical touch to any garden or indoor space.

  • Podocarpus henkelii: A slow-growing, evergreen shrub that has become a favorite in landscaping for its dense, dark green foliage.

Continuing the Tradition of Excellence

Anderson’s Seed Co. has entered a new chapter. After many years of running the business, Eric Anderson has retired, and as of November 1, 2025, Elfland Nursery has taken over the farm and operations. We, Dennis Fredricks and Ursina Bitzi, are honored to continue the work the Anderson family built. Eric is currently supporting us during this transition, and it is our hope that he will remain involved going forward, sharing his knowledge and experience with us.

We are reviewing and organizing the full seed inventory and preparing a detailed, updated seed list. Our focus is to bring more clarity and transparency to what is available and what will be ready soon. We are also building a new website where customers will be able to view seed availability and place orders online.

As we settle in, we appreciate your patience. We look forward to reconnecting with customers and carrying forward the quality and tradition this farm has represented for decades.

Our new website is under construction and can be found at:
