S. 'Pittmans Pride' is an
excellent dwarf form of Schefflera arboricola. With shorter
internodes and smaller overall form, S. Pittmans Pride is ideal
for growers who need a more compact form.
S. 'Pittmans Pride' produces an exceptionally full 10 inch pot without pinching. The main drawback is that in the larger sizes the production time is substantially longer than the regular form of Schefflera arboricola.
Although many cultivars are grown from cuttings and tissue culture this is the first type introduced which grows true from seed. As in most production, a seed variety like S. Pittmans Pride, costs less to propagate.
S. 'Pittmans Pride' has been picked up by certain growers worldwide as a specialty in their product mix. Just as demand was picking up and growers and buyers were recognizing the advantages of S. 'Pittmans Pride', Hurricane Andrew came through and blew every leaf off the parent stock plants. I was happily surprised that after a two-year interval with very little seed availability that there was still interest in this promising cultivar.
Seedco is happy to report that we have excellent production for this year. The current availability is a tribute to the tenacity and persistence of the producer who developed S. 'Pittmans Pride'.
